- 01Every price bar communicates buying and selling pressure; Brooks argues that disciplined bar-by-bar reading can identify high-probability reversal setups without indicators or pattern shortcuts.
- 02Reversals can only be assessed in context of the preceding trend — distinguishing a genuine reversal from a pullback within a trend is the book's central analytical problem.
- 03The failed breakout — price attempts to breach a level, fails, and reverses — is presented as one of the highest-probability reversal setups in the framework.
- 04The always-in concept (identifying the current dominant directional force) must be resolved before any counter-trend trade is justified, which prevents premature reversal trading.
- 05The book is notoriously dense; most readers require multiple passes and substantial active chart work before the concepts are internalized enough to apply in real time.
What's in this book
Al Brooks's book is the reversal volume of his three-part Price Action trading series, applying his bar-by-bar reading methodology specifically to the problem of identifying when a trend is ending and a counter-move of sufficient size to trade is beginning. The core argument is that every price bar in a chart communicates something about the balance of buying and selling pressure, and that disciplined readers of that language can identify high-probability reversal setups without relying on indicators, fundamentals, or pattern-matching shortcuts. Brooks insists that trading reversals requires understanding the preceding trend deeply, because a reversal can only be assessed in context.
The methodology is built on a specific vocabulary: strong and weak signal bars, entry bars, follow-through, measured moves, and the concept of always-in direction — the current dominant force in the market that must be acknowledged before any counter-trend trade. Brooks spends considerable time distinguishing genuine reversals from pullbacks within a trend, a distinction he argues most traders get wrong because they are too eager to pick tops and bottoms. He introduces the concept of the failed breakout — when price attempts to break through a level, fails, and reverses — as one of the highest-probability reversal setups in his framework.
The book is written around the E-mini S&P 500 futures chart (primarily the five-minute bar), which is Brooks's primary trading vehicle. Examples are drawn from real charts with detailed annotations. The level of annotative detail is both the book's greatest strength and its significant weakness — Brooks provides the reasoning behind every trade setup in the examples, but the sheer volume of nuance can make the framework feel unlearnable until a reader has put in substantial screen time with the concepts.
The weaknesses are notable. Brooks's writing is famously dense and demanding. The series is widely considered among the most difficult trading books to parse, and the reversal volume is no exception. Many readers find the first pass through the book produces only partial comprehension — the concepts require repeated reading and active chart work to internalize. The methodology is also exclusively technical; fundamental analysis, macro context, and position sizing are treated as outside scope. And the five-minute E-mini focus, while legitimate, does not address how the framework translates across other markets and timeframes.
For serious technical traders committed to discretionary price action methodology who have already worked through a foundational treatment of trend reading, this volume provides the most rigorous publicly available treatment of reversal identification. Not appropriate as a first trading book.
