What this book actually teaches

Antony Lewis's goal is a genuinely beginner-friendly explainer of what Bitcoin, blockchain, and cryptocurrencies actually are — written for readers with no technical or financial background, in contrast to the more specialist, jargon-heavy treatments common in the space. Lewis spent years explaining these concepts to bankers and non-technical audiences professionally, and the book reads like that: plain-language analogies before technical terms, and technical terms defined the moment they're introduced.

The book is organized in layers. It opens with money itself — what money actually does, why trust matters in a monetary system — before introducing Bitcoin as one possible answer to "can a group of strangers agree on a shared ledger without a central authority?" From there it explains the blockchain data structure in plain terms (why blocks are chained, what makes tampering with history difficult), how mining and consensus work, and how wallets and keys let people control their own funds. The second half broadens beyond Bitcoin to smart contracts, Ethereum, initial coin offerings, and the beginnings of what would become the broader token and DeFi ecosystem, plus a chapter of realistic use cases versus hype.

The natural audience is exactly the reader who wants to understand cryptocurrency well enough to have an informed opinion — a banker, a journalist, a curious professional — without becoming a developer or a monetary theorist. It sits at a level below Mastering Bitcoin (which assumes code literacy) and requires less prior context than The Bitcoin Standard (which assumes interest in monetary economics).

The honest caveat: because it's an introductory book aiming for breadth, none of its topics get the depth a specialist reader would want — readers who finish this and want to actually build on Bitcoin should move to Mastering Bitcoin, and readers who want the monetary-theory case for Bitcoin as an investment should move to The Bitcoin Standard. It was also written in 2018, so its ICO-era discussion of the token landscape predates DeFi, NFTs, and the post-2020 ecosystem.

Worth reading as the first crypto book for anyone starting from zero. Not the book to read if you already understand the basics and want depth in a specific direction.
