◈ DEFINITION
What it means
Definition
Assets you can turn into cash quickly without taking a big haircut on price — checking and savings, money-market funds, T-bills, and publicly traded stocks. A house is not liquid; a 401(k) is technically liquid but loses 10% plus tax if you tap it before 59½. Liquidity matters because emergencies don't wait for closing day.
◈ IN PRACTICE
Example
A household with $15,000 in checking, $40,000 in a brokerage of index funds, and $500,000 in home equity has $55,000 in liquid assets — the equity doesn't count until they sell or HELOC against it.
