What this book actually teaches

Robert P. Miles's argument is that the most under-examined part of Berkshire Hathaway is not Buffett's stock-picking — it is the CEOs of the operating companies Berkshire owns. The book profiles roughly twenty Berkshire subsidiary chiefs (See's Candies, GEICO, Nebraska Furniture Mart, Executive Jet, Justin Industries, and others) to argue that Buffett's real edge is acquiring well-run businesses and then leaving great operators alone.

The arguments build out of those profiles. First, Buffett's acquisition criteria function as a CEO filter — owner-mentality, long tenure, integrity, passion for the specific business — and Miles shows how consistent this filter has been across decades and industries. Second, Berkshire's decentralization is the operating model: subsidiary CEOs get autonomy over capital allocation inside their unit, send excess cash to Omaha, and almost never get a phone call. Miles is good at illustrating how rare this is among public-company conglomerates, where corporate-center meddling is the default. Third, the book draws out the cultural through-line — most of these CEOs are founders or long-tenured operators who treat the business as a craft, not a stepping stone — and argues this self-selection is what makes the decentralized model work.

The natural audience is operators, founders thinking about selling to a strategic, and students of management who want to understand Berkshire as an organization rather than as a portfolio.

The weaknesses are worth naming honestly. This is a tribute book — Miles is sympathetic and the CEOs cooperated, so the profiles skew flattering and short on conflict or failure. It is also not about Buffett's own decision-making; readers expecting investing content will be disappointed. And because it leans on interviews from a specific era, several profiled CEOs and businesses have since changed hands, retired, or evolved, which dates parts of the book. The framework — hire great operators and leave them alone — is also easier to write than to execute; the book under-explores what happens when a Berkshire CEO turns out to be wrong, which has happened.

Worth reading for operators and acquirers studying the Berkshire model from the inside. Investors looking for Buffett's stock-selection method should pick up a different book.
