What this book actually teaches

The College Board's 2015 Scholarship Handbook makes a simple argument by structure: the barrier to private scholarship money is not eligibility but information, and the students who win scholarships are usually the ones who found and applied to more of them. The handbook is a reference directory — roughly 2,100 scholarship, internship, and loan programs organized so a student can search by eligibility criteria — not a narrative book, though it includes instructional chapters on the search and application process.

The organizational logic is the book's primary value. Programs are indexed by field of study, by demographic eligibility (state of residence, ethnicity, religion, military affiliation, disability status, union membership, and other criteria), and by award size. The editorial chapters cover the mechanics of a scholarship search: how to use the indexes, how to write a competitive essay when the same core essay can be adapted across multiple applications, how to keep the aid-calendar straight alongside college applications, and how to evaluate award terms (renewable vs one-time, grade requirements to keep the money, institutional vs external awards and how they stack).

A chapter on financial aid fundamentals covers the FAFSA and institutional aid, situating scholarships correctly: private scholarships complement — and can be offset by — institutional need-based aid. Students from lower-income families who win a private scholarship at a need-blind school may see their institutional grant reduced dollar-for-dollar; the handbook explains this displacement risk clearly, which is something many families learn too late.

This is aimed at high school juniors and seniors actively in the scholarship search, and at the parents or school counselors helping them. It is a reference work, not a casual read — its value is proportional to how actively the reader uses the indexes.

The caveats are significant and structural: a dated reference handbook decays fast. This edition covers 2015 programs; amounts, deadlines, eligibility rules, and entire programs change annually. The College Board publishes updated editions yearly, and anyone using this for active scholarship searching should be using the current edition or the College Board's online tools, not a 2015 print volume. The directory format also means the book cannot surface programs that require a targeted internet search for their home institution or local organization — it is comprehensive for nationally catalogued programs, not for the local scholarships that often have the best odds.

As a framework for understanding how scholarship search works and what to look for in program terms, it holds up. As an active directory for 2025 deadlines, it does not.
